Veritas planes

Over the past half-century, plane manufacturers have tended to focus their design efforts on reducing manufacturing costs, as opposed to making planes that work better. When designing our planes, we chose to focus on better adjustment and feed mechanisms, blades that hold a finer edge, and innovative structural improvement to eliminate blade vibration.

VeritasĀ® planes are manufactured from fully stress-relieved ductile cast iron, which is superior to earlier materials as it maintains its dimensions after machining and will take harder knocks without cracking. All machining is done to a high level of accuracy in our own factory. This ensures a precision fit between parts, for fast and accurate adjustment. The sides and soles of all planes are surface ground to a high degree of finish; the soles are flat and the sides are square to the sole. With the exception of the Scraper and Apron planes, the blades are made from 1/8" thick A2 tool steel, hardened to Rc60-62. The A2 alloy takes a keener edge, is more resistant to chipping and dulls less easily than other plane blades.

No. 4 1/2" Smoothing plane
This plane has a frog supporting the blade all the way to the sole of the plane reducing blade chatter. The sole is guaranteed to be flat to 0.003" concave (never convex) the wings are square to 15 minutes (1/4 of a degree) Blade is 1/8" thick made of A2 tool steel with a weight of just over 5 lb it has the mass for effective smoothing.

No. 5 1/4" Bench Plane
At 12" long the 5 1/4" plane is often referred to as the junior jack plane the plane has a 2" wide blade that is set 4 1/22 back from the front of the plane, this extra long nose makes it easier to maintain the sole flush to the material at the start of a cut. This plane has a frog supporting the blade all the way to the sole of the plane reducing blade chatter. The sole is guaranteed to be flat to 0.003" concave (never convex) the wings are square to 15 minutes (1/4 of a degree) Blade is 1/8" thick made of A2 tool steel.

Low Angle Smoothing Plane
A low angle smoothing plane has 3 key uses, smoothing large surfaces taking a diagonal cut, shooting mitres and end grain work. The low angle of 37 degrees  minimizes fibre tearing. the plane has a bed angle of 12 degrees the blade has a bevel of 25 degrees and is bevel up. The blade is 1.82 thick A2 tools steel. The body is 10 1/22 x 2 1/2 " and weighs 3.5lb.

No. 4  Smoothing plane
This is the most commonly used bench plane its size makes it ideal for finishing work, smoothing and trimming work. The plane has a frog supporting the blade all the way to the sole of the plane reducing blade chatter. The sole is guaranteed to be flat to 0.003" concave (never convex) the wings are square to 15 minutes (1/4 of a degree) Blade is 1/8" thick made of A2 tool steel.

No. 6 Fore Plane
Ideal for smoothing large surfaces such as panels, table tops etc. The longer sole ensures accurate results. The frog extends all the way to the sole giving full support to the plane blade. It can be adjusted with the removal of the lever cap. wings and base are accurately machined and the extra large side wings make for stable shooting. The blade is 1/8" A2 tool steel. The sole length is 18" and 2 3/8" wide

Scraping Plane
The scraping plane is the ideal tool for final smoothing especially when dealing with highly figured wood or reversing grain. The frog is adjustable giving blade angles from 0 - 25 degrees. An integral  thumb screw that bows the blade to eliminate ridges caused by blade corners. the plane comes with a 0.055" high carbon blade, An optional 1/8" blade is available for those who prefer uncambered blades. A V toothed blade is available for surface preparation prior to veneering.

Cabinet Scraper
The cabinet scraper is a useful and versatile tool, this tool has a longer sole plate to prevent the blade catching when the scraper runs off the end of the work piece. The blade is 2 3/4" wide with both edges ground at 45 degrees so the tool may have 2 cutting edges. the casting is designed to protect the upward facing edged and the user from accidental damage.

Low-Angle Jack Plane
This plane excels at end grain work, is great for shooting and works well for smoothing. The plane is 15" long. This is a bevel up plane with a 12 degree bed angle. The blade is 3/16" thick A2 tool steel. Accurately machined to ensure a flat sole and square sides. Adjustment can be done quickly with a front locking knob and unique mouth adjustment screw. The adjustment mechanism with its combined feed and lateral adjustment knobmakes blade setting easy and accurate. the set screws on either side of the blade prevent it from shifting in use, but allow full lateral adjustment.
